Driveway paving in London.

Natural stone and porcelain driveway paving brings a larger-format, architectural finish. It needs the right slab thickness, bed and base for vehicle use – that is where most of our time goes.

Stone and porcelain. Specified for vehicles.

Driveway paving covers natural stone such as sandstone, limestone and granite setts, and porcelain slabs rated for vehicle use. Paving that looks fine on a patio can crack under a car if the slab thickness, size and bedding are wrong.

We specify the material and build-up for the traffic it will carry, set falls for drainage and finish edges and steps cleanly against the house.

Patio paving vs driveway paving

Patio paving is often thinner and laid on a lighter bed – fine for foot traffic.

Driveway paving needs vehicle-rated slabs or setts, smaller formats or thicker units, a full mortar bed and a deeper, compacted sub-base.

We'll tell you honestly if a chosen slab isn't suitable for parking on.

Benefits

Why choose driveway paving?

  • Premium finish

Natural textures and tones that suit period and modern homes.

  • Matches the house

Continuity from driveway to path, steps and patio.

  • Durable when specified

Vehicle-rated units on a full bed and proper base.

  • Low porosity options

Porcelain resists staining and is easy to clean.

  • Granite setts

Hard-wearing setts for borders, aprons or full drives.

  • Clean detailing

Neat cuts around covers, steps and thresholds.

  • Setts aprons and borders

Commercial

  • Building entrances and forecourts
  • Courtyards and hospitality frontages
  • Pedestrian routes with occasional vehicle access specification dependent
  • Feature areas and thresholds

Options

Choices to make.

Samples are brought to the survey. Colours on screen are indicative only.

Groundwork

The base is what makes it last.

Vehicle-bearing paving needs a deeper compacted sub-base and a full mortar bed, with slabs primed where the material requires it. Drainage falls are set out before the first slab goes down.

  • Excavation to suit vehicle loading
  • Compacted sub-base in layers
  • Full mortar bed (no spot bedding)
  • Priming of slabs where required

Installation process

How long does it take?

Typically one to two weeks depending on the area, material, amount of cutting and access. Natural stone with detailed borders or steps takes longer.

Aftercare

Sweep regularly and clean with cleaners suited to the stone. Natural stone may benefit from sealing; porcelain generally does not need sealing.

FAQs

Driveway Paving FAQs.

Can I park on porcelain paving?

Only if the porcelain is suitable for vehicle use and it is laid on a full bed over a proper sub-base. Many patio-grade slabs are not suitable.

Is natural stone good for a driveway?

Yes, when the right thickness and format are chosen and the base is built for vehicle loading. Granite setts are particularly hard-wearing.

Do stone driveways need sealing?

Some natural stones benefit from sealing to resist staining. We'll advise based on the stone you choose.

Will paving match my patio?

We can often continue the same or a coordinated material from driveway to path and patio, with the right specification for each area.

Is paving permeable?

Standard paving on a mortar bed is not permeable, so falls and drainage are designed in. For front gardens, we plan where the water goes.
